How to Convert Excel to a Markdown Table

  1. Click Choose an Excel file or drag an .xlsx, .xls or .ods file onto the box.
  2. If the workbook has several sheets, pick one from the Sheet menu.
  3. Choose column alignment and whether the first row is a header.
  4. Copy the Markdown table or download it as a .md file.

Only need part of a sheet? Select the cells in Excel, Google Sheets or Numbers, copy them and paste into the box above — no file needed. For plain .csv files, use the CSV to Markdown converter.

What Gets Converted

  • Values as displayed — dates, currency and percentages keep the format you see in Excel.
  • Formulas — replaced by their last calculated result.
  • Empty rows and columns at the edges are trimmed.
  • Pipes and line breaks inside cells are escaped as \| and <br> so the table stays valid.
  • Merged cells, colors, borders and charts have no Markdown equivalent and are dropped.

FAQ

Which file formats are supported?
Excel .xlsx and .xls, and OpenDocument .ods. You can also copy cells from Excel, Google Sheets or Numbers and paste them into the box.

My workbook has several sheets. Which one is converted?
The first sheet is converted by default. Pick another sheet from the Sheet menu and the table updates.

Are formulas, dates and number formats kept?
The converter uses the values as Excel displays them, so dates, currency and percentages look the same as in the spreadsheet. Formulas are replaced by their last calculated result.

What about merged cells and colors?
Markdown tables have no merged cells or styling. A merged cell keeps its value in the first cell and the rest are left empty; colors, borders and fonts are dropped.
